Building a Home Gym in a Garage

The garage is the most popular spot for a home gym โ€” but it comes with unique challenges. Here's the complete setup guide.

Step 1: Flooring

Horse stall mats from Tractor Supply: $50 each, 4'x6'xยพ", extremely durable. Budget $200-$400 to cover an 8'x12' lifting area. Cheaper than gym-specific flooring and identical material. They smell for 2-3 weeks โ€” leave them outside to off-gas before installing.

Step 2: Temperature Control

Garages are uninsulated. In summer, a portable AC ($300-$500) or box fan. In winter, a space heater ($50-$150). For year-round comfort, a mini-split system ($1,500-$3,000 installed) pays for itself in 2-3 years. At minimum, get insulation on the garage door panels.

Step 3: Equipment That Fits

Measure first. Standard garage ceilings are 8'-9' โ€” most racks fit, but measure the pull-up bar height. Folding racks and squat stands save space if you park cars inside. Adjustable dumbbells replace an entire rack of fixed weights. One bar, one rack, one bench โ€” start there.
